The insider read

What Miami Lakes actually is

Miami Lakes is a ~31,000-resident Town in northwest Miami-Dade — one of South Florida’s earliest master-planned communities, conceived in the 1960s by Sengra Development Corporation (the Graham family — Senator Bob Graham’s family — owned the original Miami Lakes Inc. development company). The defining design choice was the 23 named lakes that thread through the residential plan. Many homes back to water — direct lake frontage is real, with dockable shoreline for kayaks + paddleboards. The Town incorporated as the Town of Miami Lakes in 2000, formalizing the master-planned community as its own municipality with its own school + park + civic infrastructure.

The Don Shula association is significant. Don Shula — the legendary Miami Dolphins head coach (winningest coach in NFL history, two Super Bowl wins, 1972 undefeated season) — lived in Miami Lakes for decades. His name is on the Don Shula Hotel & Golf Club (originally the Miami Lakes Inn + golf course, rebranded after Shula’s involvement), Shula’s Steakhouse (the original Shula’s that started a national chain), and the local pride in the connection is real. The 18-hole Don Shula Golf Club is a meaningful Town amenity + a working golf course open to non-members + hotel guests.

The neighborhood-character is established suburban — well-maintained, well-amenitied, with strong school options and community social infrastructure. Median single-family $675K with lakefront premiums clearing $900K-$2.5M.

The Miami Lakes markets

  • Lakefront single-family — direct lake frontage with private docking access, $900K-$2.5M.
  • Larger custom homes — Royal Oaks + adjacent premium sections, $1M-$3M+.
  • Standard 1960s-1990s single-family — the foundational stock, well-maintained, $550-850K.
  • Newer 2000s-2020s subdivisions — $700K-$1.5M.
  • Townhome + condo communities — $350-650K.
  • Don Shula Hotel + adjacent condos — limited but available.
  • Rentals — strong rental pool. Single-family $3-6K/mo; lakefront premium $5-12K/mo; townhomes $2,500-$4,000.

The places that make Miami Lakes, Miami Lakes

Don Shula Hotel & Golf Club

6842 Main Street. The full-service hotel + 18-hole championship golf course at the heart of Miami Lakes. The hotel hosts weddings, corporate events, family vacations. The golf course is open to non-members + hotel guests. Shula’s Steakhouse (the original, the namesake of Don Shula’s national steakhouse chain) is on-site — the Town’s destination dining + special-occasion meal. Don Shula’s connection to the Town gave both the hotel + restaurant their identity; the connection persists post-Shula’s 2020 passing.

Main Street + the walkable Town Center

Main Street (between NW 154th + 162nd Streets) is the Town’s small-but-real walkable Main Street — restaurants, shops, City Hall, the Don Shula Hotel anchoring one end. Not on the scale of Coral Gables Miracle Mile or Miami Shores’ NE 2nd Avenue, but functional + community-anchored.

The lakes

23 named lakes thread through the Town’s master plan. Many homes back directly to water with private docks for kayaks + paddleboards + small fishing boats (no power-boats on the lakes due to size restrictions). The Town hosts annual kayak + canoe events. The lake-frontage premium is real — direct-water homes trade meaningfully above interior-block equivalents. Lake-walking + jogging paths around several of the larger lakes are community-amenity infrastructure.

The food

Shula’s Steakhouse (the namesake destination). Bocas House (Venezuelan). El Toro Loco. Las Vegas Cuban. Karu & Y (Brazilian). Pubbelly Sushi (the local outpost). Plus the chain layer + Main Street family-restaurant cluster. Strong Latin American food density.

  • Multiple private Christian + Catholic options.

  • Palmetto Expressway (SR-826) + I-75 — main highway access east + north.
  • NW 67th Avenue + NW 154th Street + 170th Street — main arteries.
  • MIA 15 min · FLL 25 min · OPF 8 min · Brickell 25-30 min · Aventura 25 min · Doral 10 min.
  • Heavy commuting infrastructure relative to size — Miami Lakes residents commute easily to Doral business corridor + Hialeah + Brickell.

Miami Lakes 2026 market: what we’re watching

  1. Lakefront premium widening. Direct-lakefront single-family inventory is finite + tightly held; pricing has appreciated faster than interior-block equivalents.
  2. Don Shula Hotel + adjacent Main Street development. The Town’s investment in walkable downtown + commercial corridor continues to add amenity-anchored pricing.
  3. Charter + magnet school strength. Bob Graham Education Center + Miami Lakes Educational Center continue to anchor family-buyer decisions.
  4. Doral spillover demand. As Doral has appreciated, value-conscious buyers increasingly look at Miami Lakes as the lower-priced + golf-amenity alternative.

FAQs

Miami Lakes vs Doral?

Adjacent + similar in feel. Doral = larger (~75K), more corporate-HQ density, Trump National Doral golf, newer subdivisions, faster-growing, median ~$825K. Miami Lakes = smaller (~31K), older master-planned (1960s), Don Shula golf, lakes-throughout master plan, established residential, median $675K. Many buyers considering this northwest Miami-Dade corridor tour both. Miami Lakes wins on established residential character + lake frontage + slightly better value; Doral wins on amenity-density + scale + new construction.

Are the lakes worth a premium?

For buyers who actually want water access: yes. Lakefront homes back to water with private docking for kayaks + paddleboards. The aesthetic + recreational + privacy premium is real. The lakes are small (no power-boating allowed in most) but the everyday-lake-life is genuinely lovely. For buyers indifferent to water, interior-block homes deliver the same Town amenities at lower per-sqft.

Public: Bob Graham Education Center (A-rated, named for Graham family), Miami Lakes Elementary, Country Club Middle, American Senior High. Charter: Miami Lakes Educational Center, Mater Academy Lakes. Private: multiple Christian + Catholic options.
